Brolene Information

  • What are Brolene eye drops?

Brolene eye drops can be used by children and adults over the age of 12 years to treat minor eye and eyelid infections such as conjunctivitis and blepharitis. These eye drops come as a liquid solution in a small bottle with a simple to use dropper top, making them easy to use even when you are on the go.

Brolene eye drops contain the active ingredient propamidine isetionate 0.1%. Propamidine isetionate disinfects the eye cleaning out and prevents further growth of bacterias and fungi that may be causing your eye or eyelid to become infected.

Contact lenses can become discoloured when using Brolene eye drops and can often aggravate eye infections making the symptoms worse. It is therefore recommended that you should avoid wearing any type of contact lense while using Brolene eye drops.

If you are unable to not use your contact lenses during treatment you need to remove them to apply the eye drops and then wait at least 15 minutes before inserting more soft lenses. Hard lenses must not be used during treatment.

Brolene eye drops also contain an ingredient called benzalkonium chloride which can irritate the eyes. It is not uncommon for people who use Brolene eyes to report some mild stinging when applying the drops. This sensation should only last a few minutes and you should then notice your eyes feel more comfortable.

What are Brolene eye drops used for?

Brolene eye drops are used to treat minor eye infections such as conjunctivitis and blepharitis which cause irritation and inflammation of the eye itself and the eyelid.

Symptoms of conjunctivitis and blepharitis may include the following:

    • Redness to the eye and eyelid
    • Dry, crusty eyelid along the lash line
    • Itchy eyes
    • Gritty feeling in the eyes

For more information on symptoms and treatments please go to our Eye Infections Treatment and Advice page.

After 2 days of using Brolene eye drops you should notice a significant improvement to your symptoms. If your symptoms have not improved you should stop using the eye drops and speak to a doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Brolene eye drops for a stye

Styes are a type of eye infection that usually only affects one eye and is unique to other eye infections such conjunctivitis and blepharitis as it is an infection of the hair follicle on the eyelash which causes a distinctive pus-filled lump on the eyelid.

Brolene eye drops are not recommended for the treatment of styes as they should clear up within 3 weeks naturally. We have more information on symptoms and treatment advice for styes over on our eye infections advice page.

How do Brolene Eye Drops work?

Brolene eye drops contain the active ingredient propamidine isetionate which belongs to a family of medications called antiseptic. Antiseptics help to clear infections by killing microorganisms such as bacteria and create an environment inside the eye which prevents further bacteria from being able to grow.

You must continue to use Brolene eye drops for at least 2 days even if you think your symptoms have cleared to ensure that all the bacteria have been destroyed. If you stop treatment within 48 hours you are at risk of the infection returning.

Brolene Eye Drops FAQs

  • Brolene is an antibacterial eye drop used to treat minor infections affecting the eye or eyelid, such as conjunctivitis and blepharitis. It can also treat acanthamoeba keratitis, a rare infection of the cornea. This is an efficient treatment, as it acts directly on the eye.

  • The active ingredient in Brolene is an antibacterial medicine called propamidine. It treats infections by preventing further growth of bacteria on and around the eye. Once the infection has stopped spreading, the body’s immune system can more easily target and kill the existing bacteria.

  • Generally, you will be advised to use one to two drops of Brolene, three or four times per day.

Before using Brolene, wash your hands and clean your eye(s) with a saline solution. Tilt your head backwards, look up, and gently pull down your lower eyelid. Carefully place one to two drops on the inside of your lower eyelid. Close your eyes then use a clean and dry tissue to wipe away any solution remaining on the skin. Remember to replace the cap as soon as you are done.

Do not let the dropper make contact with your eye or with any other surface. This can cause the medicine to become contaminated.

If you have multiple types of eye drop treatment, wait at least five minutes between uses. This will prevent one medicine from diluting and washing away another.

  • Contact lenses can aggravate an eye condition, causing symptoms to worsen. Wait 24 hours after using Brolene before you use your lenses.

  • You should begin to notice improvements to your symptoms within two days of using Brolene. Consult your GP if your symptoms persist. Do not use this treatment for more than seven consecutive days unless specifically advised to do so by a doctor.

Dispose of any bottle of Brolene which has been opened for more than four weeks.

  • Brolene may cause slightly blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating machinery unless your vision is completely clear. Consult your GP if you notice any vision problems while using Brolene.
