Almotriptan 12.5mg tablets information
What is Almotriptan and what is it used for?
Almotriptan tablets provide effective relief from migraine attacks. The active ingredient is almotriptan, which is one of the several types of 'triptan' medicine. These medicines are all specifically used to relieve migraine headaches caused by inflammation and dilation of the blood vessels within the brain.
Almotriptan 12.5 mg tablets are available in boxes of 6 tablets and are suitable for use by adults between the ages of 18 - 65 years.
What are migraines?
Migraine headaches affect 25% of women and 8% of men in the UK. The condition is thought to be at least partially hereditary, meaning you may be more susceptible if someone in your close family also suffers from migraine episodes. You may find that the most severe attacks will completely disrupt your day. Symptoms of a migraine include:
- Nausea
- Throbbing pain in the head
- Increased intolerance to strong light, noise and smell
About 1 in 4 people who suffer from migraines experience some form of a warning sign (or 'aura') before the onset of each headache. This may involve visual cues such as blurred or distorted vision. A silent migraine occurs when the aura occurs but is not followed by an episode. Migraine episodes usually last for a few hours but can continue for as long as three days. After a headache has subsided, you may feel fatigued for several subsequent days.
There are a number of things that may trigger a migraine attack, including:
- A poor diet
- Alcohol
- Caffeine
- Stress
- Lack of sleep
- Some women regularly suffer from migraine attacks during their period.
How does Almotriptan work?
It is not completely understood what causes the onset of migraine episodes. However, the throbbing pain is thought to occur due to the widening of the brain's blood vessels. Almotriptan is a serotonin (or 5HT) agonist, meaning it stimulates the brain's serotonin receptors causing blood vessels to narrow, relieving pain.
Almotriptan is most effective if taken at the start of a migraine attack, but will also provide relief if taken later on during the episode. 'Triptans' do not prevent migraines, however, they can be taken alongside preventative medicines.

Almotriptan 12.5mg tablets FAQs
Almotriptan is the active ingredient in Almogran tablets. The patent on the Almogran brand has expired in recent years, meaning the generic medicine Almotriptan is now available.
When a medicine is first introduced onto the market it is given a license or patent. Only that manufacturer can produce it. When the patent expires, other companies can produce the treatment as well, usually leading to a dramatic drop in the price due to increased competition. Generic treatments are still produced by licensed manufacturers and must conform to the same strict manufacturing standards that the branded medicines meet.
There is 12.5mg of the active ingredient Almotriptan in each tablet. There are also several inactive ingredients: those which make up the body of the tablet and agents used in the manufacturing and tableting process. For more details, please see the 'Ingredients' tab above.
It is not completely understood what causes the onset of migraine episodes. However, the throbbing pain is thought to occur due to the widening of the brain's blood vessels.
Almotriptan is a serotonin (or 5HT) agonist, meaning it stimulates the brain's serotonin receptors. The drug mimics the activity of serotonin by stimulating these receptors. This causes blood vessels to narrow, relieving pain.
Almotriptan is most effective if taken at the start of a migraine attack, but will also provide relief if taken later on during the episode. After two hours, you can take a second dose if the attack has either returned or not gone away. Do not exceed two doses (two tablets) within a 24-hour period.
It is safe to use painkillers (such as aspirin, paracetamol or ibuprofen) or anti-nausea medicines (such as Buccastem or Prochlorperazine Buccal Tablets) at the same time as Almotriptan.
However, do not use two 'triptan' medicines together. Because these all have similar effects, it will not provide additional benefit to taking more than one at the same time. Instead, you may exceed the safe dosage and put yourself at risk of adverse side effects.
Almotriptan tablets are a prescription-only migraine treatment. For that reason, to ensure the safety of our patients and the legal operating of our pharmacy, we only supply a maximum of 3 packs of treatment at one time.
This allows us to balance offering our patients an adequate supply of treatment with regular checks on their condition, symptoms, and effectiveness of treatment. This model ensures the perfect mix of convenience with optimal health and safety.
If you have no adverse effects and your migraines are well controlled, you can log in and easily re-order another supply.
Almotriptan tablets can be taken with or without food. It is much more important that they are taken as soon as possible after a migraine attack begins.
None of the above should have any effect on Almotriptan. However, alcohol can make a migraine attack worse, so you may want to avoid it. Although Almotriptan is not affected by the contraceptive pill, migraines can be linked to hormonal changes during your period

Almotriptan and other triptans are used to treat acute attacks of a migraine. They work by reversing the widened blood vessels in the brain that cause migraines. For this reason, they should only be used to treat existing, or oncoming migraines; not to prevent them.
Almotriptan tablets will not be effective in preventing migraines that have not yet occurred. They may even contribute to making your headaches/migraines worse due to overuse if they are used as a preventative treatment.
For more information on preventative treatments, you can read our Migraine page or go to the NHS Choices Migraine Prevention page.
Although it helps to relieve migraines, Almotriptan is not a painkiller. All triptan medicines are serotonin (5HT) agonists. The pain relief is a secondary effect.
Almotriptan can be used alongside traditional painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen if extra pain relief is necessary whilst the tablet is taking effect.
Almotriptan is an extremely effective migraine treatment for many people with mild, moderate or even severe migraine symptoms.
Some people may find that Almotriptan is only mildly effective, or even ineffective. There is nothing to worry about if this is the case. Almotriptan is not effective for everyone. If you have tried it on a number of occasions without getting the desired results, you can try a different migraine treatment.
Triptan migraine treatments all have the same mechanism of action. However, people respond to each one differently, for unknown reasons. If one treatment, such as Almotriptan, has not had the desired effects, it is worth trying a different treatment to see if it is more effective for you.
This will depend on your symptoms and triggers. For example, people who suffer from sensitivity to light should sit or lie in a darkened room. Those who experience issues with sound should go somewhere quiet or use a good pair of earplugs to avoid irritating their symptoms further.
Often people feel better after eating, drinking or taking a nap as well as taking any necessary treatment.
We would advise you not to split these tablets in order to change the dosage. This is because it is impossible to ensure that you will actually split the tablet in half, or that the medicine is evenly distributed throughout the tablet. So, you will not know the exact amount you are taking.
Almotriptan tablets are available on the NHS from your GP if you have been diagnosed with migraines. This is normally where we suggest people start their treatment, to ensure that their condition is properly diagnosed and any possible serious symptoms are addressed.
Many people can find it difficult to fit in time to see their GP or hard to get an appointment at all! It can, therefore, be more convenient to order your treatment online and have it delivered to your home or work address with minimum fuss. We also provide complete support to allow you to get any questions answered by our professional team by phone, email or live chat.
At The Independent Pharmacy, we take the headache out of getting migraine treatment.
