Finasteride Information

  • Quick Facts

Finasteride hair loss treatment for men is clinically proven to combat male pattern baldness. Finasteride 1mg tablets:

    • Combat hair loss by reducing the shrinkage of hair follicles
    • Are unbranded and generic but just as effective as other branded hair loss treatments, such as Propecia
    • Are designed to be taken once a day, with results usually showing within 3 - 6 months
    • Have a 90% success rate in clinical trials.

    What Is Finasteride?

Finasteride 1mg tablets (generic Propecia) are an inexpensive UK prescription-only medication that is issued to men to tackle hair loss and male pattern baldness (also known as androgenetic alopecia). They are the unbranded, generic, and cheaper version of the popular hair loss drug Propecia, which has the same drug finasteride as its active ingredient. Just as effective, Finasteride is fast becoming a popular low-cost alternative to expensive branded hair loss treatments for men. Finasteride is taken orally. Clinical studies have shown it to have up to a 90% success rate in combating hair loss and increasing hair growth in men, but it is not suitable to be taken by women. Please note that Finasteride is a baldness treatment, not a cure. You need to keep taking it for it to be effective.

    How Does Finasteride Work?

Finasteride works by targeting the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is responsible for making hair follicles smaller and causing hair loss. By inhibiting the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, Finasteride halts hair loss and allows existing follicles to recover, often leading to some level of hair regrowth.

It's important to note that Finasteride is a long-term commitment, usually showing results after 3-6 months of daily use. Discontinuing the medication reverses its benefits. As a prescription-only medication, it's crucial to consult a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and understand potential side effects before starting the treatment.

  • Finasteride Results

We know that consistency is key when it comes to treatments like this. So, for the best chance at success, Finasteride should be taken once a day. Men normally see positive results from finasteride hair loss treatment within three to six months. You need to be patient and persistent with your treatment initially - hair loss isn't stopped overnight!

You may first notice that your hair loss or receding hairline slows and then stops. In some cases, if the follicle is still able, you may notice hair re-growth. The effects of taking Finasteride wear off six months after you stop taking the medication, with the effects ceasing completely nine to twelve months afterwards.

It should also be noted that your hair follicles grow and change every three years.

Finasteride is most effective in treating hair loss where there has been some receding hairline and thinning. Finasteride is less likely to be effective in areas where there is already complete hair loss. For best results, you should start taking finasteride 1mg tablets as early as possible when you notice your hair thinning.

    How Effective Is Finasteride?

Clinical studies among men aged 18-41 (with mild to moderate hair loss) have shown that:

    • Finasteride hair loss tablets can visibly improve hair growth within 4-6 months of taking 1mg daily.

After 1-2 years, Finasteride is at its maximum level of benefit.

If you take Finasteride for 5 years, you have a 90% chance of having either more or the same amount of hair that you had when you began taking the medication. This compares with a 25% chance in men who have not taken Finasteride.

Does Finasteride Work For All Men?

Finasteride is clinically proven to combat hair loss. Nearly 6,000 men between the ages of 18 and 41 took part in one study, which went on to show that:

    • 9 out of 10 men experienced the benefits of taking Finasteride
    • Hair loss was halted in 90% of participants
    • 77% of men noticed an increase in hair growth

Bear in mind that it's always best to take Finasteride as soon as you notice any hair loss. Finasteride hair loss treatment can't regenerate your hair follicles, but it can protect them from further damage and preserve any hair you do have left.

Finasteride With Other Hair Loss Treatments

Although there is mixed clinical evidence to show extra effects, Finasteride can be used with topical hair loss treatment such as Regaine (minoxidil). It should not be taken with any other oral hair loss treatments or supplements.

    Finasteride Price vs. Propecia

Although it is medically equivalent, Finasteride 1mg tablets are a generic hair loss treatment - this means that they are unbranded. Generic treatments are still manufactured to the same high standards as the branded treatments. However, the drug companies don't have the same high research costs to recoup. Therefore, unbranded Finasteride costs much less.

    Low Cost Generic Propecia

Since the UK patent for Finasteride expired on 11 October 2014, 'generic Finasteride' has been available from pharmacies.

A generic medicine is medically the same as a branded version. It is sold under its medical name rather than a brand name, meaning that a generic medicine is a low-cost, inexpensive version of a branded medicine.

The active ingredient of Finasteride tablets is Finasteride 1mg. Finasteride tablets and Finasteride 1mg tablets are medically the same. Sometimes, generic medicines also have their own brand names, such as Aindeem.

  • Finasteride Directions of Use

Before you start your journey with finasteride, you should know how to use it effectively:

    • Those following a prescription of Finasteride should take one tablet once a day.
    • The tablet should ideally be taken at the same time of the day, every day.
    • If you are taking Finasteride, you are able to take the tablet with or without food.
    • In order for Finasteride to be successful, it must be taken on a continual and daily basis and in the way outlined above.
    • If a dosage of Finasteride is missed, then continue taking the medication as normal and DO NOT take an additional tablet to cover the missed dose.
    • DO NOT take Finasteride in a greater dosage than that outlined above, as this won't increase the tablets' effectiveness and is not recommended.

For more information on the correct dosage of finasteride, read our guide, where we discuss the topic in more depth.

How Long Should You Take Finasteride for?

Generally, it will take between 3-6 months to start seeing the results of your treatment. Finasteride is designed as a long-term preventative treatment for hair loss and can be safely taken for many years.

If you do decide to stop taking Finasteride, always consult your GP first, and bear in mind that any improvement to the quality of your hair will be lost should you choose to stop.

  • Finasteride Warnings

    • You cannot get a prescription for Finasteride for hair loss from the NHS.
    • Finasteride must not be handled by pregnant women, or women who can become pregnant. This is because if the medication is absorbed through the skin of a pregnant woman, it may lead to abnormalities in a male baby.
    • If you are taking Finasteride, you should not donate blood while following the prescription and not for a minimum of four weeks after completing the treatment. This is because if a pregnant woman were to receive the blood of a man taking or taking Finasteride (less than four weeks previously), this may damage a male baby's development.
    • Men taking Finasteride have been reported to experience both infertility and a reduction in the quality of their semen.
    • Finasteride has been known to affect the results of blood tests for the level of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in a man's blood. If you take a blood test while on a course of Finasteride, inform your doctor that you are taking the medication.
    • There have been cases where men have been reported to have developed breast cancer while taking Finasteride. If you become aware of any pain, lumps, bumps, or any other changes in your breast area while taking Finasteride, notify your doctor.

Consult your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms:

    • Discharge from your nipples
    • Excessive fatigue
    • Fevers
    • Hair loss is patchy, irregular, or comes out in clumps
    • Persistent diarrhoea
    • Raid and recent hair loss
    • Scalp inflammation
    • Unexplained weight loss

    Hair Loss Causes In Men

Hair loss happens when the male hormone testosterone changes into another hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair to fall out. Dihydrotestosterone leads to hair loss by causing your hair follicles to shrink, which in turn causes them to fall out.

We understand that each individual's experience with hair loss is unique and can be gradual, typically including symptoms like:

    • Slower hair regrowth and a change in hair texture and quality
    • A receding hairline
    • Thinning of the hair on the temples and crown of the head. This may then progress to complete baldness in some men, whereas others are left with horseshoe-shaped hair around the sides and back of the head.

Hair loss can also be caused by stress (alopecia areata) or other external factors, such as illness or chemotherapy. However, Finasteride hair loss treatment is only suitable for male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia).

Alternative Treatments for Hair Loss and Male Pattern Baldness

Another hair loss treatment on the market is sold as Avodart, which contains dutasteride. Originally sold as a treatment for an enlarged prostate, it can also be prescribed off-label for male hair loss. As a product, it's similar to Finasteride: the reviews for both Finasteride and Avodart are generally positive.

You are able to take Regaine Extra Strength (minoxidil 5%) in addition to, or instead of, Finasteride. Regaine Extra Strength comes as either a lotion or foam, and alongside Finasteride and Avodart, it is the only hair loss treatment proven effective. Regaine is the only hair loss treatment that is available over the counter; you cannot buy Finasteride without a prescription.

There are also other options, like hair loss surgery, but these procedures can be expensive and come with mixed results. Non-surgical remedies may be a safer option.

Some people buy hair growth tablets, supplements, and vitamins from online stores and shops on the high street, but these are often from dubious origins and cannot be proven to be effective and safe.

We strongly recommend sticking to prescription medication for the most reliable results. If you're feeling uncertain, don't hesitate to consult your doctor for personalised advice.

Finasteride 1mg Tablets FAQs

  • Clinical studies among men aged 18-41 (with mild to moderate hair loss) have shown that Finasteride has led to a noticeable improvement in hair growth after 4-6 months of taking Finasteride 1mg daily.

After 1-2 years, Finasteride is at its maximum level of benefit.

If you take Finasteride for 5 years, you have a 90% chance of having either more or the same amount of hair that you had when you began taking the medication. This compares with a 25% chance in men who have not been taking Finasteride.

  • In certain circumstances, yes. You need to make sure that you are buying from a UK-registered online pharmacy to ensure you receive genuine medication. If the website doesn't display its registration credentials clearly and doesn't have contact details clearly displayed, it's probably best to avoid it.

  • You should only take Finasteride if it has been prescribed to you by a registered doctor.

Finasteride is only for men over the age of 18 – it should not be used by women due to serious risks during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and it is not suitable for children and adolescents.

Finasteride should not be taken by men who are taking Proscar or any other 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor medicines for benign prostatic hyperplasia or other conditions.

  • You do not need to take a blood test before taking Finasteride.

However, if you are aged over 50 (or 40 if you have a greater than normal risk of developing prostate cancer), it is recommended that you have a before taking Finasteride.

That said, if you are aged 50 and over (40 and over if you have a high risk of developing prostate cancer), you should have a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test before taking Finasteride.

  • Irrespective of height or weight, the dosage of Finasteride is the same for everyone. This is because only a dosage of 1mg per day is required for Finasteride to be effective for hair loss. Finasteride can be taken at different dosages for other medical conditions. It is no more effective for hair loss if a higher dose is taken.

  • Finasteride works in men of any age but has been shown to be at its most effective in younger men.

  • Finasteride has been shown to work for 15 years or more in most men who take it. It normally works for the duration of your course of treatment. However there is the possibility that it will lose some of its effectiveness over time.

  • Finasteride has no effect on transplanted hair.

  • Finasteride has been shown to work in the front of the scalp as long as there is some hair in the area.

  • Finasteride can help men who are experiencing any hair loss, male pattern baldness, or androgenic alopecia at any stage. However it is more effective the sooner it is started and is most effective at tackling hair loss found on the vertex (top of the scalp).

    Finasteride hasn't been proven to:

    • Restore hair to completely bald areas
    • Reverse frontline hair loss/receding
    • Reverse hair loss in the temple regions
  • Most men who take Finasteride experience no problems when trying to conceive.

However, in some cases, Finasteride has led to male infertility. It has done so by reducing the sperm count in the men affected and making their ejaculate more watery.

It should be noted, that you should not have unprotected sex with any woman who could get pregnant, due to the well-documented negative effects this could have on the health of the child.

  • If the woman does not come into contact with Finasteride when trying to conceive, then there will be no congenital deformities or issues with the fetus. This means that women should not take or even touch Finasteride tablets when they are of childbearing age.

Finasteride can also be found in the sperm, so you should wear a condom whilst using Finasteride 1mg tablets and not try to conceive during this time.

  • Stopping the Finasteride treatment won't make you lose more hair.

However, once you have stopped taking Finasteride, you will not receive the benefits that you had while you were taking the medication. You may experience an initial shedding of hair.

  • Finasteride has been proven to make hair grow back stronger and faster. However, it won't substantially change your hair texture or quality.

  • Women cannot take Propecia because of the way that it interacts with female hormones. It's not safe for women to take it, even in small doses.

  • Finasteride is cheaper because it's a generic version of a branded, previously patented drug, Propecia. Once the patent lapsed, manufacturers were able to move in and sell their own versions of the drug for less than the original. The price difference between the two is quite substantial, especially when considered over a long period of time.
