Alphosyl Information
What is Alphosyl?
Alphosyl 2 in 1 medicated shampoo contains the active ingredient alcoholic extract of coal tar. Coal tar is an effective treatment for reducing dry, itchy skin and when combined within a shampoo can be easily applied to the scalp to help ease irritated skin caused by psoriasis, eczema and dandruff.
Because Alphosyl 2 in 1 formula contains both shampoo and conditioner it can be used on its own up to twice a week for 4 weeks to clean and moisturise, not only your scalp but your hair as well.
What is Alphosyl used for?
Alphosyl 2 in 1 Shampoo is used to treat the following dry and itchy skin conditions that affect the scalp:
- Psoriasis
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis
- Eczema
- Dandruff
How does Alphosyl work?
The active ingredient in Alphosyl shampoo is an alcoholic extract of coal tar. Coal tar works as a keratoplastic, which means it relieves itching by breaking down the keratin in the skin.
The coal tar causes the skin to shed the top layer of dead cells and slows down the growth of new skin cells, which reduces scaling, dryness and relieves itching and irritation.

Alphosyl Shampoo side effects
Alphosyl 2 in 1 Shampoo, like other medicated products, can cause some people to experience unwanted side effects. For more details on side effects go to the side effects section on this page.
Please read the Patient Information Leaflet thoroughly before using Alphosyl Shampoo.
Alphosyl Shampoo & hair loss
One of the unwanted side effects some people have reported when using Alphosyl 2 in1 shampoo is hair loss, thinning and abnormal hair texture. This is because the coal tar which is contained within Alphosyl can cause the hair to become dry and brittle.
Alphosyl 2 in 1, unlike other dry scalp treatments, however also contains conditioner, which reduces the number of hair breakages by nourishing the hair alongside treating the scalp.
For more information on side effects associated with the use of Alphosyl 2 in 1 formula, please see the side effects section on this page.
Alternative to Alphosyl
At The Independent Pharmacy, we offer a range of different treatment options for dry scalp conditions including other brands of coal tar shampoos and ointments as well as products containing another ingredient called salicylic acid.
If you are suffering from a dry skin condition such as psoriasis, eczema or dermatitis on areas of the body other than your scalp you may have previously used Alphosyl cream, which has now been discontinued in the UK.
All our available products for dry skin conditions are available to view over on our Advice for Eczema and Dermatitis page.

Alphosyl 2 In 1 Shampoo FAQs
Alphosyl is a 2-in-1 shampoo used to treat scalp conditions including eczema, psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis. It reduces scaling, inflammation and dandruff caused by any of these conditions. Its active ingredient is coal tar extract, which works by limiting the growth of skin cells on the scalp. It also breaks down keratin, the protein which makes up hair and the outer layer of the skin.
Massage Alphosyl into wet hair and the scalp. After a few minutes, you should have a lather which covers the affected areas. Rinse the shampoo out of your hair, and repeat the process if required.
Alphosyl should be used one or two times per week to reduce dandruff, or once every two or three days for the other scalp conditions (e.g. eczema, psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis).
Although Alphosyl 2-in-1 shampoo is available without a prescription, you still need to follow instructions closely in order to notice improvements to your symptoms.
Do not use this shampoo if the affected area of skin is broken or infected.
Alphosyl is unsuitable for you if you may be allergic or sensitive to coal tar, or to any of its inactive ingredients such as parahydroxybenzoates. Stop using Alphosyl if you begin to notice a reaction to the product.
Alphosyl is not known to be harmful to mothers who are pregnant or breastfeeding. As is the case with all medicines, though, you should consult your doctor just to be safe. This is especially important if you are in the first trimester of a pregnancy.
Alphosyl can cause discolorations of the skin, hair, or of your clothes. Seek medical assistance if you swallow any of this shampoo. Alphosyl may also increase your sensitivity to sunlight, so avoid tanning beds or excessive sunlight while using this treatment.
