What can Pepto-Bismol be used to treat?

Pepto-Bismol can be used to treat the following symptoms:
- Nausea
- Indigestion
- Heartburn
- Stomach pain and burning
- Nausea and excess gas
- Diarrhoea
Both Pepto-Bismol tablets and suspension make use of bismuth subsalicylate. The exact way in which this ingredient works is unknown, however it has been shown to have several actions within the gut. It seems to coat the irritated stomach and intestinal tissue, decreasing inflammation and lowering the levels of irritation you experience. It also reduces the secretions of the digestive tract and kills bacteria, including E coli, which helps to prevent against diarrhoea.

If you are using Pepto-Bismol suspension, make sure to shake the bottle well before each use. Anyone over the age of 16 should take 30ml of Pepto-Bismol liquid or two Pepto-Bismol tablets as and when required. Dosing can be repeated ever hour if necessary, but do not exceed more than eight doses in a 24 hour period. If you see no improvement after two days, cease usage and contact your doctor immediately.

For children who are under the age of 16, medications containing salicylates should not be used unless specified by a doctor (this includes Pepto-Bismol).
Pepto-Bismol dosage

Age 16 and over: Take 30ml or two tablets. Repeat the dose every 30 minutes to 1 hour as needed. Do not take more than 8 doses in 24 hours.
Pepto-Bismol side effects

Like all medicines, there is the possibility of experiencing side effects when using Pepto-Bismol.
- This product may cause a temporary and harmless darkening of the stool or tongue. If symptoms do not disappear after 3 days or stopping product use - consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Warning: this product contains amaranth (colouring) which may cause allergic reactions including asthma; and aspartame (sweetener) - a source of phenylalanine, which may be harmful for people with phenylketonuria.

Stop using Pepto-Bismol and see your doctor if:
- symptoms are severe or persist for more than 2 days
- diarrhoea is accompanied by fever
- you notice anything unusual or have unexpected side effects
- you accidentally take too many tablets.
Pepto-Bismol ingredients

The active ingredient contained in Pepto-Bismol is Bismuth Subsalicylate.

The tablets also contain: Calcium Carbonate, Mannitol, Povidone, Talc, Magnesium Stearate, Amaranth Aluminium Lake (E123), Saccharin Sodium, Peppermint flavour, Vanilla Cream flavour, Aspartame (E951).

The liquid also contains: Aluminium Magnesium Silicate, Methylcellulose, Methyl Salicylate, Sorbic Acid (E200), Benzoic Acid (E210), Salicylic Acid, Saccharin Sodium, Sodium Salicylate, Amaranth (E123), and Purified Water.
Pepto-Bismol warnings

Do not take Pepto-Bismol if you are:
- Under 16 years, due to a possible association between salicylates and Reye's syndrome (a very rare but very serious disease)
- Allergic to salicylates including aspirin or any of the other ingredients
- Taking other salicylates including aspirin
- Pregnant or breastfeeding.
Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using Pepto-Bismol if you take medicine for:
- thinning the blood (anticoagulants)
- diabetes
- gout.
