Scheriproct Information

  • What is Scheriproct Ointment and what is it used for?

Scheriproct Ointment can be used by adults over the age of 18 years for up to 7 days to treat both internal and external haemorrhoids. Each tube comes with a washable application making it easy to apply even to treat inside the anus.

Scheriproct is fast-acting and highly effective. Containing prednisolone, a steroid that reduces the inflammation and cinchocaine, which acts as a local anaesthetic to ease pain and settle the itching.

You should not use Scheriproct Ointment for more than 7 days because long term use of topical steroids can cause higher than advised amounts of the ointment to be absorbed through the skin increasing the chances of experiencing side effects.

If you are continuing to suffer from piles after 7 days of using Scheriproct Ointment, you should speak to a doctor or pharmacist for treatment advice.

    How does Scheriproct work?

Scheriproct Ointment has a dual-action effect, using the ingredients prednisolone and cinchocaine, to ease discomfort and reduce haemorrhoids.

Prednisolone is categorised as a Corticosteroids, which relieve pain and inflammation by working within the body's own cells to reduce the chemicals that cause the skin to become red, painful, itchy and swollen.

Cinchocaine is a medicine known as a local anaesthetic and reduces the pain and irritation caused by haemorrhoids by blocking pain signals from reaching the brain, temporarily numbing the area where the ointment has been applied.

    Scheriproct effectiveness

Most people that use Scheriproct Ointment will notice a significant improvement to the size and discomfort caused by haemorrhoids within 5 -7 days.

You should not use Scheriproct Ointment for more than 7 days. If you do not see an effect within this time you must speak to a doctor or pharmacist about treatment options.

Scheriproct Ointment FAQs

  • Scheriproct contains Cinchocaine Hydrochloride (a local anaesthetic) and Prednisolone (a topical steroid). For a full list of ingredients see the 'Ingredients' tab.

Scheriproct is a topical cream that helps to numb the pain associated with piles and treat the inflammation present.

  • In adults and children 18 years and over, Scheriproct should be applied twice daily, usually in the morning and evening, and after each bowel movement. Before you use Scheriproct, gently but thoroughly wash and dry the anus (back passage) and the skin around it. Always wash your hands before and after applying Scheriproct Ointment.

To apply Scheriproct Ointment externally (the area around the anus):

    • Squeeze a small quantity (about the size of a pea) on to the top of your finger.
    • Spread it gently over the skin and just inside the anus.
    • Do not rub it in.

If you need to apply Scheriproct Ointment inside your back passage:

    • Put the separate nozzle (applicator) onto the tube.
    • Squeeze the tube until the nozzle is full of ointment. The amount of ointment in the nozzle is one dose.
    • Insert the nozzle very carefully into the anus until the whole length of the nozzle is inside. Then, while squeezing the tube gently, withdraw the nozzle.
    • Wash the nozzle carefully in hot soapy water and rinse thoroughly. You should not use Scheriproct ointment for more than 7 days. If there has been no improvement in your symptoms after 7 days treatment, you should see your GP.
  • Scheriproct is normally used in a 7 day course to treat piles & haemorrhoids. After 7 days you should be able to tell if it has treated your condition and if not you should see our GP. Using Scheriproct on and off or for a couple of days usually means it is less effective making it unlikely that it will be an effective treatment to clear up your piles. It is therefore important that you use Scheriproct for at least two days after symptoms have cleared to ensure that they do not return.

  • Scheriproct contains two active ingredients, a local anaesthetic and a topical steroid. Haemorrhoids/piles is caused by the inflammation of blood vessels around and inside the rectum. These inflamed blood vessels can cause itching, stinging and general discomfort. Cinchocaine Hydrochloride (a topical anaesthetic) helps to numb the pain and stinging of piles and reduce discomfort. Prednisolone (a topical steroid) helps to reduce inflammation of the haemorrhoids causing them to shrink and eventually disappear.

  • Generally Scheriproct is not used with any other piles treatment (such as Proctosedyl or Anusol HC) as they have a similar method of action and usually do not provide any additional benefit. Simultaneous use of multiple piles treatments may also increase the risk of experiencing side effects.

  • Scheriproct should be used to treat mild to moderate piles and haemorrhoids (first to second degree). First and second degree piles are defined by NHS Choices as where there are small or large swellings inside the anus that may come out of your anus when you go to the toilet before disappearing inside again. If you suffer with prolapsed haemorrhoids that hang out of the anus all of the time, or your symptoms are worse, you should have these diagnosed by GP.

  • If treatment with Scheriproct Ointment is ineffective on your piles after 7 days of treatment, you should see your GP for an examination and further treatment options. If you find Scheriproct Ointment does not clear your haemorrhoids, you should not use other similar piles treatments like Proctosedyl or Anusol HC as these are unlikely to be effective if Scheriproct hasn't worked and may increase the chance of side effects.

  • If you find treatment with Scheriproct successful and your piles improve, you should continue using Scheriproct for a few days (up to a maximum of 7 days) before stopping your treatment. This will ensure that any remaining haemorrhoids are treated and give you the best chance of keep you clear of recurring symptoms.

  • It is possible for Scheriproct to clear your piles to levels where they can be kept at bay by lifestyle changes and over-the -counter treatments, such as Anusol and Germoloids, whereas for other people they may find that their piles return after a period of time.

It is not advised to use Scheriproct for long periods over 7 days or to prevent haemorrhoids from occurring.

  • The Independent Pharmacy Online Doctor service is able to prescribe Scheriproct to people aged 18 years and over for the treatment of first and second degree piles and haemorrhoids. If you are aged under 18 and suffering with piles, you will need to see your GP to get treatment that is appropriate for you and your condition.

  • If you stop using Scheriproct and your haemorrhoids come back, you may restart treatment at any point. If your condition improves then you should continue with treatment for up to 7 days however, if it is less effective during subsequent rounds of treatment you should see your GP for further examination and treatment.

  • As well as using a dual action piles treatment such as Scheriproct, you should also get in to the habit of cleansing the affected areas regularly to prevent infection and worsening of symptoms. You should wash twice daily with warm, not hot, water using a mild cleansing agent. When washing, ensure you do not scrub the area too hard so as to irritate the skin as this can make symptoms worse.

Constipation can have a role in causing and worsening piles. You should ensure you are drinking plenty of water, eating lots of foods high in fibre and cutting down on junk food. Try to avoid straining when going to the toilet and ensure you go to the toilet when the need hits you, ignoring the call can lead to constipation or straining later.

  • Scheriproct should be used with great care during pregnancy and as such should only be prescribed by your GP or midwife, it is not suitable to purchase online.
